Engaging Families in Substance Use Disorder Treatment: A Practical Approach for Clinical Providers

This training will highlight some of the barriers to family involvement and factors to consider when engaging families in the treatment process. Attendees will develop an understanding of the benefits to incorporating family members into substance use disorder treatment. Attendees will learn techniques to utilize when working with clients and their families as well as how the clinician can become comfortable working with the family system.  

About the Presenters:

Peter Juliano is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor, currently working at Gooding Wellness. Peter has been helping adolescents, adults, and families struggling with addiction and mental health disorders for more than 10 years. He has worked as a counselor, family therapist, and administrator in inpatient substance use disorder treatment and hospital settings. Peter was previously an adjunct professor at Adelphi University School of Social Work and taught graduate level courses in individual counseling, group counseling, motivational interviewing, and family therapy.

Julia Purcaro is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor working at Mountainside- Huntington, NY. She has extensive experience working with adults, adolescents, and families with co-occurring disorders in substance abuse residential treatment programs. Throughout her career, Julia has managed departments in substance abuse programs, provided clinical supervision to help team members expand their knowledge and skills, and assisted with program development. At Mountainside, Julia uses a systemic approach to help clients work towards their treatment goals in individual, group, and family therapy. She incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Structural Family Therapy to assist clients in making positive changes as individuals as well as within their family systems. 

OBJECTIVES: In this Live Interactive In Person Workshop, you will be able to:

  •  Explore the benefits of the parallel process of family involvement in substance use disorder treatment.

  • Discuss barriers to involving family members in substance use disorder treatment.

  • Identify techniques to use and factors to consider when engaging families in substance use disorder treatment.

  • Review the importance of the therapist’s self-work when engaging in clinical services for clients and their families.
