In Person CE event!

Firearm injury is among the leading causes of death for Americans aged 1-45 years old, but many clinical and community organizations receive little-to-no training on how to discuss firearm access or community violence risk with patients/clients. This session aims to increase attendee knowledge, understanding, and comfort utilizing evidence-based tools and skills to implement firearm injury and mortality prevention strategies in a variety of settings to meaningfully intervene and reduce risk associated with widespread access to firearms.

Olivia Frank, MPH, is the Injury & Violence Prevention Program Manager at Northwell Health’s Center for Gun Violence Prevention. Olivia’s portfolio focuses on implementing and evaluating the Center’s community-and-patient-facing programs, including the Hospital Violence Intervention Program (HVIP), and strengthening collaborations with surrounding New York City and New York State community violence intervention organizations. Originally from Canada, Olivia holds an MPH from Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health, where she pursued a specialized course in injury and violence prevention, focusing on the intersections of adverse childhood experiences and community violence.

OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1) Describe the disease burden of intentional (suicide, homicide) and unintentional (accidental) firearm injury and mortality on a local and national level.

2) Compare and contrast various forms of firearm injury and mortality prevention initiatives, including universal screening, hospital-based violence intervention programs, and lethal means counseling.

3) Reflect on opportunities to integrate firearm safety and violence prevention into diverse patient and/or client-facing interactions.

Supporting Families Through the Parallel Process of Residential Treatment

2 Social Work CE’s!

FREE! 2 Social Work CE available

Families are systems, so when one family member experiences challenges or changes, the rest of the system reorganizes around that change through a parallel process. We know the parallel process occurs when clients enter treatment and as families take their next steps. Working with families with one member entering residential treatment presents complexities that can be challenging for outpatient providers supporting the family before and after residential. This workshop discusses how to support individuals and their families entering residential treatment, reviews the general structure of a residential treatment program and what referring providers can expect both for the individual and the family, and explores strategies for supporting the individual and family in their next steps. Presenters will share psychoeducation, case studies, tools to integrate into daily clinical practice, and facilitate discussions to provide opportunities for peer supervision.

About the Presenters:

Jack Britton, LADC, LPC, VP of Clinical Services at Turnbridge

As vice president of clinical services, Jack ensures the ethos of Turnbridge’s mission is carried to and thrives within all our programs. He also recruits and hires superb clinical talent from around the country. Additionally, Jack builds and develops relationships with Turnbridge partners through tours, conferences, and speaking engagements. He holds master’s degrees in accounting and counseling.

Prior to Turnbridge, Jack worked in Minnesota and Texas, where he developed a passion for working with young people and their families. Over time, Jack saw first-hand how quality of life improves the most when a person engages in long-term treatment, a truth supported by decades of research, and so in 2016 he moved to Connecticut to work in Turnbridge’s young adult extended care program. Since then, Jack has worked in a clinical capacity in all our service offerings. In 2017 he started Turnbridge’s community outpatient program and in 2020 co-developed and launched the company’s first adolescent residential program.

This presentation is appropriate for: clinical professionals, psychologists, therapists, counselors, and social workers.

OBJECTIVES: In this Live Interactive In Person Workshop, you will be able to:

Supporting Families Through the Parallel Process of Residential Treatment

Gabrielle Wynschenk, LMFT, Family Wellness Clinician at Mountainside

Gabrielle works at Mountainside Treatment Center as a Family Wellness Clinician. At Mountainside, Gabrielle facilitates various psychoeducational group offerings for the individuals in residential treatment, facilitates psychoeducational group offerings for family members of Mountainside clients, maintains a caseload in which she conducts individual and family therapy sessions, creates group curriculum on family dynamics, facilitates webinars and other educational offerings for community providers, and writes articles for Mountainside’s blog. Gabrielle is passionate about including families in the addiction treatment process and works to integrate her expertise in family systems theory with her knowledge of addiction treatment to best serve her clients’ needs.
