Josh Flaherty, LMSW, Executive Director, Adventure Recovery

Josh is a licensed therapist, lead AR guide, and avid outdoor educator. He brings 15+ years of experience as an executive in the entertainment industry to his expertise.  His clinical role and work in the recovery community are informed by his deep connection to nature.  He began as a client with Adventure Recovery in 2018 and progressed through AR’s Guide Training program. Josh is the first person in AR history to transition from client to Guide. Josh received his Master of Social Work from Fordham University and his experience and contacts in the recovery community, the entertainment industry, and corporate America inform the breadth and vision of his work with AR. As Executive Director, he manages operations, staff supervision, and participates on the executive team, driving strategic growth and development. 

Tim Walsh, Founder & CEO, Adventure Recovery

Tim is an outdoor educator and recovery coach trainer who specializes in guiding people through the external and internal wilderness. Over the last 25 years, he has founded and led numerous programs and institutions in youth development and the addictions recovery and prevention fields. He offers individualized support for those seeking purpose and spiritual development. Tim advises and develops experiential education, adventure therapy, and substance misuse awareness programs for private schools, youth development programs, treatment centers, and national conferences. He’s a pioneer in the field of adventure-based counseling and was one of the founding team members of Mountainside Treatment Center and served as Executive Director for Newport Academy.

This course is approved for 1 SW CE and is appropriate for all levels beginning, middle and advanced level clinicians.

OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1) Identify the practical applications of incorporating outdoor and nature-based adventure programming in SUD / Mental Health treatment programs.

2) Have an understanding of relevant research studies that contemplate the relationship between intentional time in nature and effects on physical, emotional, and mental health.

3) Have an understanding of the positive neurochemical effects of nature-based adventure activities and how that is beneficial to the SUD / Mental Health recovery process.

4) Understand strategies and techniques that help connect outdoor adventure activities and traditional clinical therapeutic models

SOCIAL WORK: Jumana Grassi LCSW NY# 0556  is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the New York State Education Department State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers.

ACE: Jumana Grassi, #1721 is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit.
