The Rise of Sports Book Gambling: Risks, Identification, and Treatment Strategies

The rapid expansion of sports betting has led to a rise in gambling-related harm, affecting

individuals, families, and workplaces. This workshop will explore the psychological and

financial risks of sports book gambling, how to identify problem gambling behaviors, and

effective intervention strategies. Attendees will gain valuable insights into treatment options and

resources to support individuals struggling with gambling addiction.

Brian Dolan, MHC, CRC is a coach and addictions counselor with many years of experience managing recovery houses and Collegiate Recovery Programs at renowned Connecticut-based institutions, as well as counseling many students and clients around addiction. He works to destigmatize addiction and build awareness of the disorder.

John Roesch, CAI, CASAC, CRC, CIP is the Business Development Representative for SOBA New Jersey. He is also a certified interventionist, case manager and recovery coach who founder Life Assurance Recovery . He carries the message of recovery and hope to those in need.

This presentation is appropriate for: clinical professionals, psychologists, therapists, counselors,

and social workers.

OBJECTIVES: After this in-person workshop, you will be able to:

1. Identify the signs and symptoms of problem gambling, with a focus on sports book gambling and its psychological impact.

2. Understand the neurological and behavioral similarities between gambling addiction and substance use disorders.

3. Apply screening and assessment tools to evaluate individuals for gambling-related issues in clinical and EAP settings.

4. Explore intervention strategies and treatment options, including therapy, financial counseling, and self-exclusion programs.

5. Support families of problem gamblers by providing resources and guidance on setting healthy boundaries and seeking help.


SCHEDULE:

10:00 - 10:30am: Identify the signs and symptoms of problem gambling, with a focus on sports

book gambling and its psychological impact.

10:30 - 11:00am: Support families of problem gamblers by providing resources and guidance on

setting healthy boundaries and seeking help.

11:00 - 11:30am: Explore intervention strategies and treatment options, including therapy,

financial counseling, and self-exclusion programs.
